Bandarawela is regarded as a great place to start your journey further into the hills or the East of the island. It is also located centrally between some of the most breathtaking towns on the island, the town itself being one. Haputale, Ella and Nuwara Eliya are only a stone’s throw away.
Lipton Seat is one of the famous observation points in Sri Lanka. Located on top of the Poonagala hill it was once the observation point for the well-famed tea planter Sir Thomas Lipton to look around the region’s expansive tea plantation.
One of the other attractions is the Dhowa temple which is not too far from the property. The drive leading up to the temple too is one that will leave you in awe. Located on the main road leading to Badulla, the temple dates back to 2000 years. It was the temple where king Walagamba sought refuge. The paintings in the shrine room are believed to be his and one of the key features in the temple is the carved Buddha on a rock which is still incomplete. This is believed to have been one of the king’s works too and he had to leave the area before he could complete the work.
The Bogoda wooden bridge is an iconic landmark belonging to the 16th century in this region. The bridge is noted as one of the oldest existing bridges in the world. The bridge is made entirely of wood including the nails itself. Having a length of 50 feet and width of 6 feet the bridge crosses a river. The drive leading up to the monastery is one of the most peaceful drives through the hills passing paddy fields, valleys and forests as well as the interior villages.
If you make your way to Haputale which is approximately 10 km from Bandarawela, one could see the South Coast from here, as the town is located on the edge of the hill country on a clear day the Hambantota lighthouse too can be seen from here.
Ella too is only a short distance from Bandarawela. The Ella Gap, Demodara Nine Arch Bridge trek, Ella Rock hike, as well as a trip to the Ravana, falls and Ravana Caves are a must do when here. Ella has a notable number of holidaymakers arriving from across the world and the town itself has become one a popular tourist stop in the hills.
